Bicycles in Japan
One of the first things that foreigners arriving in Japan are often surprised by the large number of bicycles that can carina seen on the streets and sidewalks of the city. Almost everyone, from grandmothers to well-dressed executives on their way to the office use Jitensha "(bike) as a regular means of transport. Whether you are used to pick up children from preschool to pedal the nearest station, or go to work or college, the bike has become an integral part of Japanese society. Even the police, which often can be seen at night patrolling by bike, prefer surfing the web of narrow streets lined constituent peoples most Japanese cities. Both wheels are indeed everywhere, and to the point that huge parking areas near most shopping malls and train stations are dedicated exclusively to accommodate bicycles.
Despite its convenience and attractiveness as a form of lower fares, too are a significant inconvenience and possible physical threat to riders and pedestrians who do not learn the rules of the road. These rules are: no traffic. In the theory of law are bikes to be ridden only on city streets and sidewalks, unless signs indicate otherwise. In reality this rule is totally ignored by everyone. More often than not I remember, I met
jump out of the way of some zealous cyclists who chose the path of least resistance would be to operate directly to me. Or feel the sudden swoosh of air touch my arms like a crazy driver came out of nowhere like a ghost at night invisible maniac fast from behind like me in silence
walking house.
Despite these pitfalls of the bike in Japan for the better or the worse is here to stay, and as the saying goes, "if you can not beat em join em." For those of you who are considering buying one on arrival you will be pleased to know they are cheap average running cost about 10,000 yen, and used bikes are available for less. The most common bike for daily use are usually speed models with steel frames include a stand, generator lights, fenders, front brake caliper and rear disc brakes, and a basket of steel mesh that attaches to your handlebars to carry supplies and other items.
