Solar energy: the future of flying?
With fears of a limited supply of fossil fuels and environmental impacts to greedy gas jets make progress, researchers are working on aircraft to remove the carbon footprint involved in the flight. Designed to work with solar power, these machines may be the wave of the future.
Those who think that solar airplanes are a utopia to think again. There are working prototypes already in use. There are also other prototypes under development. Although they are far from perfect, these machines are proving to be an alternative worth exploring.
While there may be some commercial aircraft long before the trade in petrol for its solar panels, the technology advances. Examples of this prototype are:
